When teaching math in kindergarten I use a teacher group, a table group, and a technology group to see all of my students for small group math instruction daily. There are so many different kindergarten technology ideas which include free math games that you can easily use in your own technology block if you want to teach math like this!
My district currently uses iReady math and students have to fulfill 45 minutes of iReady time a week. This means they are often working on iReady math (which is paid) for the first three days of the week while in technology rotation. I check minutes at the end of each day and when students have finished their required content minutes then they have the option of these kindergarten technology ideas for the rest of the week’s technology groups!
Free Apps
My students’ favorite app for math is definitely ABCYa. With the free subscription they can play six games a week and there are tons of options for their grade level including counting fish, a birthday candle game, and several roll the dice games which are their particular favorite. I love that I can pull this website up on the SMARTBoard and play the game whole group before they do it independently so I know they know how to play them correctly.
Another app they love in my classroom is Park Math HD. This app has games where students practice counting, sorting, comparing, addition, and subtraction. The music, characters, and graphics engage my students and I also like how it has a first grade option as well so my students excelling with kindergarten math concepts can continue to grow.
Free Website
One of my favorite kindergarten technology ideas is a free website I love to use in my classroom called SplashLearn. Students can access this on tablets or computers and there are tons of games and activities. Students work on their own individual pathways, completing activities that help them bridge gaps in their knowledge and continue to grow with things they already understand. As a teacher you will love the progress reports to see exactly what your students are struggling with and what they already know. These are particularly helpful for filling out conference forms, intervention reports, or for IEPs!
Free Games
PBSKids has free math games that students will love because they feature some of their favorite characters including Curious George, the Cookie Monster, and more! Many of the games have accompanying videos and printables. Students practice basic math concepts as they go on adventures with the characters who usually have problems solved as students answer questions correctly.
Paid Kindergarten Technology Ideas
While many kindergarten math free games give my students the options they need to practice math concepts, sometimes the paid versions give a little extra boost to the teacher. My district buys I-Ready math and my students complete their necessary minutes on this every week before playing other options. The program comes with three diagnostics, one at the beginning, one in the middle, and one at the end. This helps chart student growth and ensures they are working on their individualized pathway towards math mastery. The teacher games and instructional videos aid you in instructing your students and the individual components can be used in the classroom or at home.
Paid BOOM
BOOM cards are a technology that can be used completely free. Many decks are free and you can assign them to students with a free teacher account. The paid teacher account is what I have because it allows me to keep data on how my students are doing on each assigned deck. I love that I can see how many times they completed the digital task cards, their accuracy average, and their highest score. This data is especially great for progress monitoring since you can assign decks to students based on exactly what they need to work on.
Kindergarten Technology Ideas Takeaways
There are so many different kindergarten technology ideas which include apps, games, and websites where you can get safe and free games for students to practice their math skills.
