The 5 Best Fall Read Alouds for Kindergarten

The end of all my welcome to kindergarten, friendship, and alphabet books means fall is here! There are so many fall read alouds for kindergarten to choose from. September is full of books teaching about the autumn season, apples, and changing leaves. These are just a few of my favorites!

“There Was An Old Lady Who Swallowed Some Leaves”

There Was An Old Lady Who Swallowed Some Leaves - book cover one of the fall read alouds for kindergarten in September

Author Lucille Colandro is always having this poor old lady swallowing something she shouldn’t and this series is a huge hit with my kindergarteners each year. The repetition always encourages students to read along with you and the illustrations and scenarios are engaging and hilarious. This is probably one of my favorite fall read alouds for kindergarten, especially for practicing retelling! Grabbing some puppets or having your students make their own paper bag puppets with the characters and items can be an easy way to introduce reader’s theatre in kindergarten and practice retelling the story.

“The Scarecrow: A Fall Book for Kids”

I borrowed this book from a teammate one year and it automatically became a favorite. This book by Beth Ferry is absolutely gorgeous! This tale of an unlikely friendship between the scarecrow and a crow is perfect for the fall season with its beautiful illustrations and storyline. It also works well for the beginning of the school year when you are building that classroom community and emphasizing kindness and helping one another. If you practice random acts of kindness in your classroom this can be a great introduction to those.

“Pete the Cat: Falling for Autumn”

Pete the Cat, created by James Dean, is usually one of the favorite characters in my class each year. I try to collect his seasonal books so my students are excited to see him pop up throughout the year. Book series are such a great way to encourage students to read and love being read to.

In this book Pete finds out that fall might be just as groovy as summer when he learns there are certain seasonal activities he can only do in the autum such as finding his way through a corn maze! This is a great fall read aloud for kindergarten to inspire conversations on what your students can do in the fall and pair it with some illustration work or beginning writing after!

“The Leaf Thief”

A list of best fall read alouds for kindergarten wouldn’t be complete without a squirrels book! This book by Alice Hemming follows Squirrel’s adventures as he looks for his missing leaf. This is one of the most fun books to read with lots of pauses to keep students engaged and even predict what they think might happen next. The way it is written leads naturally to this and your students will definitely be kept on their toes wondering what is happening as the book goes on. It’s funny, dramatic, and a book your students will definitely want to read again!

“The Bad Apple”

The Bad Apple- book cover five of the fall read alouds for kindergarten in September

I really love books that incorporate themes as well as teaching character traits or lessons. This tale by Edward Hemingway is an excellent example of that! Apple Mac gets picked on for becoming fast friends with a worm named Will. He isn’t sure what to do since he has never been called names before, but he ultimately values his friendship even if it is a bit nontraditional. If you’ve never read this book before you definitely need to check it out!
